Boat Check. What should be on the boat?

When you get to the boat here are things to check:

Is there any major damage?

Where is the fuel tank? Is there a spare tank? How do I change the fuel line over to the spare tank?

Is there sufficient fuel? Is the vent cap open?

Is the fuel line connected properly at the tank and the engine?

Locate and squeeze the primer bulb. Does it stiffen? Are there any signs of cracks or leaks in the fuel line?

How do I lower the engine? Is there a power tilt switch on the console or shift lever? It there a kick-stand release on the outboard bracket?

How do I start the engine? Is there a keyed electric start? Is there a pull-start? Is there an on/off switch or safety switch for the ignition?

How do I choke the engine for cold start? Do I pull a knob on the outboard engine or push in the key while starting?

Start the engine.  Check for a stream of water squirting from the base of the outboard motor (usually starboard side). If the water is not streaming out, shut down the engine and let someone know right away.

How do I advance the throttle if the engine is stalling?

How do I turn on the navigational lights? Are they working? Do they come on automatically with the engine?

Do I have PFD’s on board? Where  are they located? How many? Wearable or throwable? Condition?

Is there a fire extinguisher (not required)? Where?

Is there an anchor?

Is there a Paddle?

What about fenders and dock lines?

Is all HOCR equipment on board? (Map, program, radio, megaphone, ID Pennant in holder, red emergency flag)

What other equipment is available (Horn, Boat Hook, Whistle, Radio, Flares)?

Are there any drain plugs? Are they properly inserted and sealed?

How do I shift out of neutral? Is there a release button on the shift lever?

How do I shut down the engine in an emergency?

How do I raise the engine if it is shallow or I ground the prop?
